Charity needs cash to buy new mattresses.
By DOUG GREENE
So many people are calling Acts 4 Ministry in Waterbury for new mattresses that there's only one complete bed left in the charity's warehouse. The reason is bedbugs.
Treatment for the pests means spraying with chemicals and pursuing bedbugs where they live. Bedbugs come out of wooden bedframes or the walls of buildings, attack their prey, then return to the cracks and crevices. The furniture often has to go.
She's trying to raise cash to buy mattresses, not wanting to accept used mattresses or used pillows. Mattress covers are another commodity in demand at Acts 4 Ministry.
"If you're already low income, and you lose all your furnishings, we can pretty much replace their table and chairs and dresser if that happened to become infested, or even a couch because those are easy to get donations of," Coffin said. "New mattresses cost money."
"About 30 percent of the time, it's because they've had a bedbug infestation," said Laura Coffin, executive director of the charity. "Most of the time, they're moving out of the place that had the bedbugs because it's not being treated."

Need a free mattress?
Pinellas Park, Florida - A Bay area company wants to give away 200 new mattresses to people who need them this holiday season.
For every mattress that Mattress and Furniture Wholesalers sells, they'll donate a free mattress to a charity that needs it. So far, they've sold 14 mattresses this holiday season. Their goal is to sell 200.
"We're trying to get a mattress under everyone who's sleeping on the floor right now," said George Brooks IV. "Of the four things you need -- food, water, air -- a good place to sleep is really one of them."
The company, operated out of a warehouse on 66th Street North in Pinellas Park, is owned by a father and his son.
And they say this giveaway isn't about publicity.
"Actually, [on about] 20 percent, we'll actually lose money for the mattresses we give away, but it's not about the money," said George Brooks III.
The Brooks are looking for a charity that will take the mattresses and distribute them to people who need them.
If you'd like to help out, or if you'd like a mattress, call Mattress and Furniture Wholesalers at 727-755-0660 or visit the warehouse at 6715 66th Street North in Pinellas Park.

Mattress Firm acquires 26 Mattress Discounters stores
Industry veteran Roger Magowitz sells Virginia, North Carolina stores
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, December 2, 2010
HOUSTON — Top 100 retailer Mattress Firm has acquired 26 Mattress Discounters stores in Virginia and North Carolina from mattress industry veteran Roger Magowitz. Magowitz has operated the business since 1986 under a licensing agreement with the Richmond, Va.-based Mattress Discounters chain, and the newly acquired stores will retain the Mattress Discounters name.
The stores are in the Virginia Beach, Va., and Hampton Roads, Va., markets.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
"We are excited to bring these well-established locations into the Mattress Firm network," said Steve Stagner, CEO of Houston-based Mattress Firm. "This is a great opportunity to combine our scale with an experienced and proven leadership team to continue to grow the Mattress Discounters business."
Stagner said Magowitz will join Mattress Firm in the newly created post of charitable advisor. He will spearhead the retailer's charitable and philanthropic efforts and continue to focus on the Seena Magowitz Foundation, an organization he founded several years ago to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.
Seena Magowitz, Roger Magowitz's mother, died of pancreatic cancer in 2001, and the foundation's annual celebrity golf classic is this weekend in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"We are glad that Roger will have an ongoing role at Mattress Firm. He is an icon of the bedding and furniture industry and has done a phenomenal job building a successful business," Stagner said.
Magowitz said he "couldn't be more pleased to have a company like Mattress Firm carry on what I started more than 25 years ago."
"Mattress Firm is a great cultural fit and it is especially gratifying that the people that have been with me for so long will get an opportunity to work for such a wonderful company," he added.
Mattress Firm has more than 600 stores in 22 states.

City Targets Mattresses in War Against Bed Bugs
The Department of Sanitation changed the rules for the way New Yorkers dispose of mattresses and box springs to limit the spread of the insects.
By Jennifer Glickel

MANHATTAN — The Department of Sanitation has changed its rules for how New Yorkers are to dispose of mattresses in response to the bed bug epidemic in the city.
The DSNY is requiring that people putting mattresses or box springs on the sidewalk for collection cover them with a plastic bag to help prevent an increase in bed bugs, the agency said in a statement.
Under the new policy, residents who don’t dispose of their mattress properly will incur a $100 fine. The DSNY won’t put the new rule — and the accompanying fine for not following it — into full effect until Jan. 3rd, 2011.
"There has been a rise in bed bug-related complaints within the City, and bedding is the prime nesting place for most bed bugs," Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said in the statement.
"With this new rule, ...we will safeguard our workers and help to mitigate the spread of bed bugs throughout the City."
Council member Gale Brewer, who introduced a bill in 2008 to put the new mattress disposal rule into action, was supportive of the DSNY's efforts to curtail the spread of bed bugs throughout New York City.
"I appreciate the efforts made by the Department of Sanitation to address the bed bug epidemic that our city has been grappling with, an issue I have been working on since 2006," Brewer said in a statement.
If residents leave their improperly discarded mattress in front of a building that is not theirs, the property owner will receive a fine. But, as with all summonses the DSNY gives out, the owner would go before the Environmental Control Board and be able to dispute the fine, Sanitation Department spokesman Matt Lipani told DNAinfo.
Lipani emphasized that if someone dumps a mattress in front of a residence that isn't theirs, that constituted illegal dumping.
