CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio - Lullaby Earth has launched a line of lightweight,
nontoxic, and recyclable crib mattresses that offer a number of health
and safety features for babies, the company said.
Lullaby Earth crib mattresses are made by the same company that makes Naturepedic organic cotton mattresses.
Unlike
competing products, Lullaby Earth crib mattresses are free of
vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam (including "soybean" foam), PFC- and
antibacterial-treated fabrics. They are also waterproofed with
easy-to-clean, food-grade polyethylene, the company said. The primary
material in the line is polyethylene, but the beds also use some
polyester.
"We saw the need for affordable, nontoxic, and recyclable
infant mattresses and developed these two super-lightweight models with
the highest Greenguard certification available," said Barry Cik, Lullaby
Earth's technical director.
Weighing seven pounds (one-quarter the
weight of many crib mattresses), the mattresses are six inches thick.
The firm surface and edge support provide a comfortable and safe sleep
environment, and the seamless edges prevent bacteria buildup from
sitting moisture, the company said
.
The Lullaby Earth mattress
retails for $159, while the Lullaby Earth 2-stage Dual Firmness is $199.
The Lullaby Earth line is carried by Buy Buy Baby stores as well as
independent retailers.

Local Store Offers Summer Camping Tips
While families are returning from Spring Break, Arden & Earl Edelcup, owners of Ross Boutique are busily preparing for what they call, “Our holiday season at Ross’s - - Camp shopping” and offered many tips and suggestions for parents getting their kids ready for camp.
Ross’ has been one of the “go-to” places in downtown Highland Park for families seeking a large affordable selection of items to help campers be prepared for a summer filled with great experiences and memories created at summer camp. Ross Boutique, located at 625 Central Ave. in Highland Park has been referred to as the “Camp Headquarters” on the North Shore for many years.
35 years ago Ross’s was a two-aisle variety store. Today this multi-faceted store continues to transform itself to meet the evolving needs of their northshore clientele. Most importantly, their Summer Camp Headquarters section has grown so popular that it now boasts a large “home” within the store. From Soffe shorts to egg carton mattress pads, there is truly nothing a camper needs that can’t be found inside this summer camp mecca. Most importantly, Arden Edelcup states, “Every staff member at Ross’s is armed with the individual camp’s supply lists, as well as years of experience, so parents and kids can actually enjoy their guided tour through the maze of options.”
“Packing your child's bags for an overnight camp can be a daunting task if you're not prepared,” said Arden Edelcup. “The process of gathering their personal items and then packing them into a large duffle can be simplified by following these basic guidelines.
Ross’s has composed a suggested list of the camp items, almost all of which are available at Ross’s:
Bathroom supplies such as towels, wash cloths, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, hair brush or comb. This year, some of the camps are requiring a lice comb and preventative lice shampoo. All of these need to be carried in a bath caddy. Some campers like the collapsible mesh caddy while others like the more durable plastic caddy. Both are great options. This year, Ross’s brought in a plain terry boy’s bathrobe, while most girls opt for more colorful tie dye terry shower wrap or bathrobe.
Shirts and shorts: (it seems that you are going in the summer, so probably short sleeved tops, but pack a few long sleeved ones just in case it gets cold at night or depending on your climate range), pants (again, short or long, some of each), underwear, socks, shoes, hiking boots (if you'll do a lot of hiking).
Bedding & Sleepwear: Sleeping bag or comforter, sheets, and pillow are a must. However, most campers also bring a mattress pad to cover the flimsy cot mattresses. Another popular item is a bunk caddy that campers hang off of the side of their bed to hold their pens, paper, & books and journal. PS. Don’t forget the booklight. While some campers like to bring their regular pajamas from home, others like flannel pants and t-shirts to sleep in. They can also wear these same flannel pants or shorts during the day.
Bags and Luggage: Most camps request that campers use a duffel bag, and at Ross’s you will find a great inexpensive one that can be airbrushed with your camp name. To identify your bag, most campers put bright colored duct tape on their bag.
Every day Essentials: Don’t forget a battery operated fan for your camper. Some campers prefer the fans that clip onto their bunk, while others purchase the larger ones that cool the whole room. Cute small rugs also make for a cozy living space. This year, a new fan necklace has been popular so campers can be cool all day long. Of course, make sure that campers remember their glasses, contacts, flip-flops, sunglasses, lip balm, hair supplies, deodorant, glasses. laundry bag, several bottles of suntan lotion, a durable water bottle, flashlight/lantern, and a swimsuit.
Stationery & Color Wars: When campers and their parents come in, the fun really begins when they can pick out their own unique stationery, pens, & games to bring with them. This allows kids to express their own individuality, while getting them excited to embark on their camp experience. Parents & Grandparents, don’t forget to stock up on the popular Penny Laine camp cards to send to your camper. Some camps do not allow packages of goodies from home, while others limit them to a few per season. However, sending cards is a wonderful way to put a smile on your camper’s face. Campers also like to bring with a variety of toys and books such as: Mad Libs, Yes& Know books, stickers, journals, pillows, comic books and more. Most campers choose a variety of these time tested items before they go so they can entertain themselves of the bus ride and in their bunks.
Many camps engage in Color Wars which places campers into different groups for a week of friendly competition. This is fun and festive time for campers to show their spirit. Ross’s has everything for Color Wars from Go Green sweat bands to Go Red face paint markers. First time campers may not know which team they are on until they arrive while returning campers stay with the same team every year. Ross’s has composed a suggested list of camp preparation tips:

- Clear a large area such as a spare room or bed to spread out all the items your child will be taking with him. Begin gathering the items she will be taking with them at least one month before the trip. Place them in the designated area mentioned

Ross’s has everything for Color Wars from Go Green sweat bands to Go Red face paint markers. First time campers may not know which team they are on until they arrive while returning campers stay with the same team every year. Ross’s has composed a suggested list of camp preparation tips:
- Place a notepad and pen in the packing area. As you pack your child's things, it will be easier to write items down that you remember at the last minute rather than stopping in the middle of packing to go on a scavenger hunt for forgotten items
- Many people buy new socks and undergarments to send with their child to camp. If appropriate, plan to leave the new items at home, and pack the old. Then he can throw away old undergarments at the end of each day. This will lighten the return home packing process.
- Try to select clothes that won't wrinkle easily and aren't too bulky.
- Check the weather forecast for the camp so that you can pack appropriately. Don't forget to send a rain jacket or plastic poncho.
- Do a literal head-to-toe checklist for each set of clothes to make sure you haven't forgotten anything. Ask yourself the following questions. "What does my child need for his head/hair?" "What does she need for her face?" "What does he need for his neck?" Ask yourself this question for each part of your child's body, down to the feet.
- Plan to send your child in their heaviest pair of shoes while traveling to the camp so that their bag will be lighter.
- Pack a couple of sets of old clothes that your child can wear for messy activities.
- If you're concerned that the travel size items won't last the entire time your child is at camp, then have them use the items a few weeks before he leaves to see how many days each bottle will last. Then you will know what quantity of each travel size item to purchase. Refill the bottles if you can, instead of buying new ones.
- Try to purchase containers that close securely to prevent leaks.
- Most camps do not provide linens and towels. Be sure to check and see if you need to send these items.
- Place two pillow cases on their pillow on the chance that the outside one gets dirty. Also, they can turn the pillowcase inside out.
- Placing items in clear zip-top bags allows your kids to find things in their luggage quickly without unfolding clothes and disrupting an organized bag. The zip-top bags also help you pack tightly by removing excess air in the luggage.
- If your camper is traveling with a group for instance on a bus, place an easily identifiable marker on his bag, such as colorful tape or luggage straps, so that they can quickly distinguish their bag from others.
- Label all of your child's items with their name in case they are misplaced at camp.
- Pack a robe and flip-flops for use in the shower area. A bag that can hang on the shower faucet is a handy place for your child to place their shower toiletries.

Consumer Reports: Safe and affordable cribs
ust because a crib is in the store doesn't mean it's safe for your baby.
Consumer Reports tested a number of cribs for safety.
"We looked at 14 cribs from $160 all the way up to $800. To see how well they hold up, we tested them until we literally destroyed them," said Kim Kleman of Consumer Reports.
Each crib was inspected and measured to make sure it adheres to federal guidelines. For example, testers used a block to check if the crib slats are close enough together so little arms and legs can't get trapped.
Another test simulated a baby's repeated bouncing and jumping to see how well the mattress support system holds up.
"I refer to that test as our temper-tantrum test," said Kleman.
And testers measured the strength of the crib slats when pulled.
While all the cribs met government standards, the test revealed big differences.
"But the good news is you don't need to spend a fortune. We found two cribs that we recommend that cost $200 or less," said Kleman.
One is the Graco Charleston Convertible Crib for $190.
"It converts into a toddler bed, so you'll likely get lots of use out of it," Kleman said.
Consumer Reports also recommends Delta Venetian Convertible Sleigh 3-in-1, which is priced at around $160.

7 Things That You Should Never Buy Used
For bargain shoppers, hitting up secondhand stores, garage sales and online resellers can be a no-brainer.
Actually, in most cases it is a no-brainer.
But while buying used is a great way to save money and ease our savings accounts – and score some unique items – there are some things that are best purchased brand-spanking new.
Forget infamous online sales like a half-eaten piece of toast or pair of dirty socks; there are some cases where buying second hand isn’t just gross, it can be downright dangerous and maybe even an FDA violation.
Baby stuff costs a fortune and most kids grow out of it before the credit bill even arrives. That’s why buying used clothes, toys and other accessories for babies and young children is a great option.
But there’s one exception: cribs and children’s furniture. That’s because the safety standards for these items continue to evolve.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Administration enacted new mandatory safety standards for cribs that went into effect in 2011, which means cribs purchased before that time may not meet them.
Cribs are also occasionally subject to recalls, which can be difficult to determine years after the fact. Wear and tear as well as missing parts can also affect a used crib’s safety.
Does all this make a used crib a hazard? Not necessarily, but the problem is that it’s much harder to determine whether it’s safe enough for your baby.
Manufacturers often voluntarily stamp car seats with these dates (which tend to be about six years in the future) to ensure that parents are using seats that meet the latest safety standards.
Even if a car seat appears to be in good condition, it’s much like a crib: you just don’t know its history. If the seat has been in a crash, this can compromise its integrity, making it less reliable in a future collision.
Used seats might also be missing parts and/or instructions, which can make proper (and safe) installation nearly impossible.

The Secrets To Buying The Right Mattress
Korky Vann Savvy Shopper
April 15, 2012
Need a new mattress? Get ready to lose some sleep. The endless array of types, styles, brands and prices can make the process of choosing one feel more like a nightmare than sweet dreams.
"For a lot of people, it's a daunting purchase," says Bob Naboicheck, president of Gold Bond Mattress in Hartford. "There's a confusing selection of options. Visco foam feels different from gel, which feels different from latex, which feels different from innerspring. Then there's organic materials. And pillow tops. Two-sided pillow tops. Euro-tops. No question, it can be overwhelming."
Even Consumer Reports has stopped rating mattresses because everyone's idea of the perfect choice is different. (As Goldilocks said, some are too hard, some are too soft and some are just right.)
Add to that, there are no industry standards for such terms as "firm," "extra firm or "plush. All vary from on maker to another. And manufacturers often modify the models they make for different retailers by changing fabric color, padding, quilting and model names, which makes it impossible for consumers to comparison shop. That's no small thing, because the price of a new queen-size mattress and boxspring (the most common size sold) can run anywhere from less than $1000 to more than price of a new Hyundai Sonata. (Bloomingdale's made news a few years ago when it introduced its Palais Royal Plush Mattress, which carries a $27,000 price tag.)
But if you're sleeping on a mattress that's more than a decade old, you're probably not getting a great night's rest. According to Shop Smart, a Consumer Report's publication, mattresses generally last about eight to 10 years and worn-out mattresses can cause aches, pains and a lot of tossing and turning.
Dr. Patrick Troy, a pulmonologist at the Hartford Hospital's Sleep Center, says people may not be aware that their mattresses are affecting their sleep.
"Your whole environment has to be conducive to falling and staying asleep and that includes your bed," says Troy. "If you are sleeping on an old mattress that doesn't keep your body aligned in a neutral position, it can cause you to be restless during the night."
Your sleeping style figures into the selection process as well. Back sleepers, for example, need a mattress that provides firm support. Side sleepers need medium support. Stomach sleepers should opt for a softer surface.
While close to 80 percent of mattresses sold in this country are innerspring models, Naboicheck says the American consumer is currently in love with memory foam. (Memory foam uses your body's heat to conform to your body.)
"Some people love it, while others say it makes them feel hot," says Naboicheck, who himself sleeps on a firm innerspring mattress.
And it's not just your sleep needs you'll have to take into account.
"Your partner's movements can disrupt your sleep," says Troy. "The mattress that works for them might not be right for you, so you'll have to compromise."
"Number" beds that allow each person to adjust the firmness level for his or her own side are the answer for some couples, but ShopSmart magazine reported that some of their panelists found the mechanism noisy.
To help consumers make the right choice, some stores have developed mattress quizzes. The Ikea website, for example, takes consumers through a firmness, sleeping-style and body temperature check list and provides suggestions.
Bedding producer Kingsdown Inc. developed bedMATCH technology. Shoppers answer basic questions on sleep habits and bedding preferences at an in-store kiosk, then lie down on a diagnostic mattress to have their measurements taken. Based on the findings, the bedMATCH system recommends mattresses to be rest-tested. (A number of Connecticut Sleepy's stores have the kiosks.)
Naboicheck says diagnostic gimmicks may help point you in the right direction, but are no substitute for taking the time to actually lie down on a bed and try it out. And not for a minute or two. Consumers need to give it at least 10 minutes. A half hour is even better. Wear shoes you can slip off and comfortable clothing and settle in. Spend time on your back, your side and your stomach.
"Keep an open mind and try everything," he says.

Mattress store unveils napping room which tired New Yorkers can use for free to get a couple of hours shut-eye
By Olivia Fleming
A hotel-style bedroom open to the public to take free naps, has been set up in an all-natural mattress store in New York's SoHo.
The complimentary upscale sleeping room, set up on the lower level of the store Coco-Mat, is a free by-the-hour suite - complete with couch, coffee table, bathroom and their famous customized Californian king.
In a no-strings-attached arrangement: the founder and Greek native Paul Efmorfidis welcomes you to take his all natural and handmade mattresses for a test drive, for a one, two or three hour nap.
While the idea comes from an 'I sleep well, then I buy' mentality, Mr Efmorfidis has no qualms if you simply just want to pop in for lunch (yes, they serve lunch every day in the showroom) and a restful nap.
In an age when the attitude of 'what's the catch?' is prevalent, he told MailOnline, there is none.
'In Greece, we want to show that everything is transparent. This is the policy of our company, to show that our mattresses are the best in the world,' he said.
'If I tell you they're the best, why should you believe me? With [the sleeping room], you can see for yourself, with no obligation to buy.'
Really?
Yes, he explained: 'I have no trouble if they misuse [the service]. If you come here with your friends for a handful of naps and don't buy anything, that's OK.
'I guarantee when it's time for you to invest in a mattress, you'll think of us first. And you'll talk about the experience with your friends.'
The idea started in Coco-Mat's Amsterdam store and proved a great success.
Not so much a business model as a great idea, the unique room enables an everyday person, tourist, or SoHo regular to build a close rapport with the brand, even if they're not in the market for a mattress.
When you walk in to Coco-Mat, which opened earlier this week, you're immediately offered an orange juice or espresso, because all Mr Efmorfidis wants is for you to hang out, and have fun in his showroom.
'We want to be close with our customer,' Mr Efmorfidis said. 'We're a friend'.
Coco-Mat's mattresses are made from all natural materials, including seaweed and eucalyptus, and have no metal springs, instead using natural rubbers made from trees to give the mattress's their firm hold.
'I was in Greece sleeping on Sparta beach, lying on seaweed and enjoying the sun,' Mr Efmorfidis explained. 'The iodin in seaweed is so good for your health, I thought, why don't I make a mattress from seaweed myself?'

Crib mattresses: 72 percent of models use suspect chemicals, advocacy group says
By Dina ElBoghdady
The report by Clean and Healthy New York, an environmental health advocacy group, surveyed 28 companies that make most of the standard-size crib mattresses and found that 72 percent of mattress models use one or more chemicals of concern, including certain flame retardants, antibacterials and waterproofing additives.
Only three firms — Vivetique, White Lotus and Naturepedic — make some or all of their crib mattresses without using risky chemicals or allergens, according to the group.
The results come as efforts aimed at better regulating chemicals in household products have gained traction.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of six types of chemicals called “phalates” in children’s products starting in 2009. The Food and Drug Administration is investing in research on the health impact of bisphenol A, a chemical widely used in plastics. And within a few weeks, the Senate plans to hold a hearing on a measure authored by Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.) that would for the first time require chemical makers to prove that their products are safe.
Consumer advocates are particularly enthusiastic about the Lautenberg legislation because it attempts to revamp the 35-year-old law that regulates chemicals instead of simply targeting one or two chemicals at a time, a tactic often adopted by federal regulators and various states or cities that have targeted potential toxins.
Even as a series of studies has linked various chemicals to serious health problems, the Environmental Protection Agency has tested for safety only 200 of the roughly 80,000 chemicals registered in this country and banned only five, according to federal data. That’s because federal regulators must overcome enormous legal burdens before they can test or restrict a chemical, consumer advocates said.
“It’s the Wild West in your home when it comes to chemicals,” said Andy Igrejas, director of Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, which reviewed the crib mattress report. “There are both known hazardous chemicals and chemicals whose health effects are still unknown that wind up in the products that come into our houses.”
Clean and Healthy New York focused on the crib mattresses because infants are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure, and they spend up to 16 hours a day with their faces pressed up within inches of chemicals their parents probably do not know about, said Bobbi Chase Wilding, lead author of the study.
The 28 companies surveyed by the group make 190 models of crib mattresses. Some — about 20 percent, or 39 models — made “small changes with big claims” by adding thin layers of organic cotton, for instance, and marketing those mattresses as “greener” even if other components contained risky chemicals, the report said.
An additional 22 percent refused to disclose the chemicals they used, making it impossible to figure out whether their products posed a hazard, the report said. The firms were most reluctant to answer questions about flame retardants.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission approved standards in 2007 to limit fires from spreading in mattresses. The rule did not require the use of chemical flame retardants, said Scott Wolfson, the agency’s spokesman. The report said that safer flame retardants include hydrated silica and wool.
Two of the companies with mattresses that contained at least one chemical of concern — Dream on Me and Foundations — offered no “green models” of mattresses and refused to provide some information about their products, the report said.
Officials at Foundations could not be reached for comment.
Joe Olds, a manager at Dream on Me, said he is satisfied that his mattresses are safe. Olds said the company buys pre-cut foam and mattress covers from other firms and sells good-quality, fire-retardant, waterproof, bedbug-proof mattresses. “I’ve never had any problems,” Olds said. “The only problem I had [is with consumers who] use the mattress for six kids and they call to say it’s worn out.”
Olds said his products are certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. But the association said it does not certify crib mattresses. The industry is working on voluntary rules for those products.

' My husband and I actually bought the turtle for ourselves. It sits on a chair in our bedroom - we turn it on every night before bed. The turtle is very cute and has three color lights to choose from (blue, white and green). The stars are kinda blurry with the white light, but are clear with the green and the blue. The light is soft and lasts just long enough to get to sleep'..... Logan
'I am an avid stargazer and have been looking for the perfect celestial touches for my soon-to-be-arriving baby's room. This is the most adorable and unique night light I have ever seen! It works beautifully - the star projections on the ceiling are great, and I am especially thrilled that they are actual constellations. To the reviewer who complained about the shell breaking and injuring her 18-month old, it says on the box that this is for ages 3 and up. It's not meant for babies to play with; it's more of a night light than a toy anyway. Overall I think it is a high quality, wonderful item and I would recommend it to anyone!' .....Stargazin' new mommy

'First, let me say, that I bought this early, as I have a newborn (3 months old), but at some point my daughter will be old enough to sleep in her own room, and as most kids do, she will want a nite-light.
Well, I was skeptical at first, but this thing really does produce a cool looking and relaxing night sky on the ceiling. Say goodbye to those lame, glow-in-the dark stars that you put on the ceiling of your kids' rooms...you know, the ones that never really hold the glow. This thing projects a beautiful sky, and in 3 different colors (although they claim the red is mostly for the nite-light usage)'. .....John
'Wonderful item. My husband and I purchased the turtle to help our infant daughter fall asleep. Within minutes she would be off to dream land. Our 3yr old son also loves the turtle. He would sit in her room and gaze at the stars every night so we decided to purchase another one for his room. This is obviously not a toy use a dresser or shelf for best results'. .....Mcdaris

'This turtle may seem on the pricey side if you were just looking for a nightlight for your child, but it is well, well worth it. Our son just turned three and has had it for years - but still asks for it every night. BLUE, BLUE he says (he likes the blue stars in it). And it really puts a LOT of stars on the ceiling. Beats getting the 'glow in the dark' stars and trying to stick those on a 10-foot ceiling. Turtle stays on a long time too - so very rarely do we hear him 'scream' that he wants his turtle back on (since it's dark after that) - but if so, after turning it on one more time, back to sleep'.....Kevin

Bedbugs Force Call for Help
Charity needs cash to buy new mattresses.
By DOUG GREENE
So many people are calling Acts 4 Ministry in Waterbury for new mattresses that there's only one complete bed left in the charity's warehouse. The reason is bedbugs.
Treatment for the pests means spraying with chemicals and pursuing bedbugs where they live. Bedbugs come out of wooden bedframes or the walls of buildings, attack their prey, then return to the cracks and crevices. The furniture often has to go.
She's trying to raise cash to buy mattresses, not wanting to accept used mattresses or used pillows. Mattress covers are another commodity in demand at Acts 4 Ministry.
"If you're already low income, and you lose all your furnishings, we can pretty much replace their table and chairs and dresser if that happened to become infested, or even a couch because those are easy to get donations of," Coffin said. "New mattresses cost money."
"About 30 percent of the time, it's because they've had a bedbug infestation," said Laura Coffin, executive director of the charity. "Most of the time, they're moving out of the place that had the bedbugs because it's not being treated."

Need a free mattress?
Pinellas Park, Florida - A Bay area company wants to give away 200 new mattresses to people who need them this holiday season.
For every mattress that Mattress and Furniture Wholesalers sells, they'll donate a free mattress to a charity that needs it. So far, they've sold 14 mattresses this holiday season. Their goal is to sell 200.
"We're trying to get a mattress under everyone who's sleeping on the floor right now," said George Brooks IV. "Of the four things you need -- food, water, air -- a good place to sleep is really one of them."
The company, operated out of a warehouse on 66th Street North in Pinellas Park, is owned by a father and his son.
And they say this giveaway isn't about publicity.
"Actually, [on about] 20 percent, we'll actually lose money for the mattresses we give away, but it's not about the money," said George Brooks III.
The Brooks are looking for a charity that will take the mattresses and distribute them to people who need them.
If you'd like to help out, or if you'd like a mattress, call Mattress and Furniture Wholesalers at 727-755-0660 or visit the warehouse at 6715 66th Street North in Pinellas Park.

Mattress Firm acquires 26 Mattress Discounters stores
Industry veteran Roger Magowitz sells Virginia, North Carolina stores
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, December 2, 2010
HOUSTON — Top 100 retailer Mattress Firm has acquired 26 Mattress Discounters stores in Virginia and North Carolina from mattress industry veteran Roger Magowitz. Magowitz has operated the business since 1986 under a licensing agreement with the Richmond, Va.-based Mattress Discounters chain, and the newly acquired stores will retain the Mattress Discounters name.
The stores are in the Virginia Beach, Va., and Hampton Roads, Va., markets.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
"We are excited to bring these well-established locations into the Mattress Firm network," said Steve Stagner, CEO of Houston-based Mattress Firm. "This is a great opportunity to combine our scale with an experienced and proven leadership team to continue to grow the Mattress Discounters business."
Stagner said Magowitz will join Mattress Firm in the newly created post of charitable advisor. He will spearhead the retailer's charitable and philanthropic efforts and continue to focus on the Seena Magowitz Foundation, an organization he founded several years ago to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.
Seena Magowitz, Roger Magowitz's mother, died of pancreatic cancer in 2001, and the foundation's annual celebrity golf classic is this weekend in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"We are glad that Roger will have an ongoing role at Mattress Firm. He is an icon of the bedding and furniture industry and has done a phenomenal job building a successful business," Stagner said.
Magowitz said he "couldn't be more pleased to have a company like Mattress Firm carry on what I started more than 25 years ago."
"Mattress Firm is a great cultural fit and it is especially gratifying that the people that have been with me for so long will get an opportunity to work for such a wonderful company," he added.
Mattress Firm has more than 600 stores in 22 states.

City Targets Mattresses in War Against Bed Bugs
The Department of Sanitation changed the rules for the way New Yorkers dispose of mattresses and box springs to limit the spread of the insects.
By Jennifer Glickel
DNAinfo Reporter/Producer
MANHATTAN — The Department of Sanitation has changed its rules for how New Yorkers are to dispose of mattresses in response to the bed bug epidemic in the city.
The DSNY is requiring that people putting mattresses or box springs on the sidewalk for collection cover them with a plastic bag to help prevent an increase in bed bugs, the agency said in a statement.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images - FILE)Under the new policy, residents who don’t dispose of their mattress properly will incur a $100 fine. The DSNY won’t put the new rule — and the accompanying fine for not following it — into full effect until Jan. 3rd, 2011.
"There has been a rise in bed bug-related complaints within the City, and bedding is the prime nesting place for most bed bugs," Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said in the statement.
"With this new rule, ...we will safeguard our workers and help to mitigate the spread of bed bugs throughout the City."
Council member Gale Brewer, who introduced a bill in 2008 to put the new mattress disposal rule into action, was supportive of the DSNY's efforts to curtail the spread of bed bugs throughout New York City.
"I appreciate the efforts made by the Department of Sanitation to address the bed bug epidemic that our city has been grappling with, an issue I have been working on since 2006," Brewer said in a statement.
If residents leave their improperly discarded mattress in front of a building that is not theirs, the property owner will receive a fine. But, as with all summonses the DSNY gives out, the owner would go before the Environmental Control Board and be able to dispute the fine, Sanitation Department spokesman Matt Lipani told DNAinfo.
Lipani emphasized that if someone dumps a mattress in front of a residence that isn't theirs, that constituted illegal dumping.

Sealy, Mattress King donate beds to Salvation Army
Stearns & Foster®, owned by Sealy®, North America's No. 1 mattress brand, announced this holiday season it will team with retail partner, Mattress King and The Salvation Army® to provide new mattresses and furniture to The Salvation Army residential shelters in Little Rock, Ark.
Of the nearly 30 million Americans who receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year, many of those in need who rely on The Salvation Army's residential shelters will sleep easier this holiday season knowing that they will have a safe and comfortable place to rest their heads.
For every Stearns & Foster mattress sold by participating retailers between November 22, 2010 and January 3, 2011, Stearns & Foster will make a donation toward new mattresses designed specifically for The Salvation Army, with a total value of up to $1 million.
Participating Stearns & Foster retailer, Mattress King, will also support their local Salvation Army by participating in a retailer gift-matching opportunity and making a $50 cash donation to The Salvation Army in Little Rock, Ark. for every Stearns & Foster sold between November 22, 2010 and January 3, 2011. Mattress King customers will also be able make cash donations in Salvation Army kettles at the store.
"The Stearns & Foster brand has a wonderful history of philanthropy and we are thankful for the opportunity to work with The Salvation Army to help people fulfill a very basic need - a safe and restful sleep," said Jodi Allen, Chief Marketing Officer, Sealy. "Stearns & Foster founders, G.S. Stearns and Seth Foster both came from humble beginnings and we commemorate their efforts this holiday season with these donations."
Stearns & Foster is remembered, according to the Ohio state Historical Marker, "for its commitment to public service and their business leadership throughout the last century."
Dating back to 1846, the brand's founder, George S. Stearns has been credited for his service to the community, for building the first church, library and school in Wyoming, Ohio. One of the ways Stearns & Foster continued his legacy was contributing drinking water and mattresses during Ohio's great flood of 1937.
Nationwide, The Salvation Army's residential shelters provide support to men, women and children at the point of need, with programs operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Families who are in need of assistance are able to visit their local Salvation Army residential shelters to receive a variety of support services, including food, counseling and financial assistance.
"We are forever grateful for our corporate partners that come along side us to help those in need," said Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army. "Sealy's creative strategy will certainly help us provide more people with a good night's sleep at our programs across the country. And sleep is something we all need."

Biting back against bedbugs: Totowa company sees problem as an opportunity
BY ANDREW TANGEL
STAFF WRITER
As bedbugs infest news coverage and crawl into the public consciousness, a Totowa business has found an opportunity for profit.
TYSON TRISH/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
Buy this photo Totowa business is capitalizing on the bed bug hysteria of the day. Precision Custom Coatings LLC is making covers that will keep bed bugs out of mattresses. The mattress covers help hotel operators salvage at least the mattresses in the case of infestations. Shaile Dusaj is the company's point person for the covers.
Precision started producing the encasements — which aim to keep the blood-sucking pests from colonizing mattresses and box springs — in mid-2009.
"It's a problem for some people. It's an opportunity for us," said Shaile Dusaj, Precision's director of industrial sales.
By this time last year, the company's three factories in China were shipping 40,000 encasements a month to Precision's customers, which then repackage them under their own brand names and distribute to retailers, Dusaj said.
Now the company is shipping about 160,000 encasements a month, mostly to the United States but also to Australia, Thailand and Japan.
"It has just exploded," Dusaj said of demand.
It's unclear to what extent bedbugs have become more of a problem. The bugs had been considered eradicated but have resurfaced at high-profile locations such as the Niketown store in Manhattan.
While the demand has grown, Dusaj said Precision's three factories outside of Shanghai are running at only about one-third of capacity.
Precision began producing the encasements last summer after its customers expressed interest in the products, the components of which Precision already made, Dusaj said. The company had produced similar coverings marketed to sufferers of dust-mite allergies.
The bedbug-proof encasements are made from polyester fabric laminated to a polyurethane film, along with a fine-tooth zipper that closes tightly, covering the entire mattress.
"The encasement is a proven non-chemical tool to reduce the potential harborages for the bedbugs," Changlu Wang, a Rutgers University entomologist, said, using the technical term for where bedbugs live.
While one could argue encasements can lead to more dispersed infestations, Wang thinks they are a good part of a pest-control strategy.
In cases of outbreaks involving non-encased mattresses, the cases can trap the bedbugs after investgations.
"They sense the presence of the host. They want to bite, but they cannot bite through," Wang said.
"They can multiply inside," he added, "but they cannot get out. Eventually they will starve to death."
In 2009, Precision sold about 200,000 encasements, contributing 1 percent to the company's annual revenue of about $120 million, said Scott Tesser, Precision's president. Precision sells its products to businesses that distribute to retail stores and hotels.
So far this year, Tesser said, the company has sold more than 600,000 units. At this rate, he said, encasements would contribute up to 7 percent to the company's sales this year.
Tesser expects Precision's mattress encasement sales to at least double next year, but it's unclear how strong demand will remain in the long term.
"I'm not sure how long the window stays open," Tesser said. "I'm sure at some point the 'epidemic' gets under control. Does the consumer feel the same need to purchase a mattress encasement? I don't know. But I'm certainly anticipating this current scenario will last through 2011."

Best Way to Buy a Mattress - Steps and Considerations to Take When Mattress Shopping
Is it time for you to buy a mattress? Perhaps your old one needs replacement, or maybe you're upgrading from a full sized bed to a queen sized, or maybe you now have a partner to share your bed with. Whatever your reasons are for looking for a new mattress, always keep in mind that mattress buying isn't a minor decision. You are going to be sleeping on your mattress every night, and the quality of your sleep will affect your temperament for the entire day. So you should definitely be careful in searching for the right mattress to buy.
Here are some steps to follow:
1. Evaluate Your Needs
Check your needs. Do you have an existing mattress? If so, what problems do you have with it? Is it the size? Is it too firm? Is it too soft? Whatever observations you have regarding your current mattress can help guide you to getting a better mattress. Also, consider any special needs. Do you prefer a more luxurious feel when sleeping? You might appreciate the mattresses with velveteen surface covers rather than the usual cotton covers. Do you and your partner have different firmness preferences? You might want to consider the air mattresses with adjustable firmness/softness levels.
2. Research
Once you know your own needs, it's time to know what the industry offers. Do research on the different types of mattresses and know what their advantages and disadvantages are. Check out consumer reviews and expert recommendations. Find out which mattresses are most recommended for your specific situation, given all your needs and special preferences. Find out which mattress manufacturers produce the best mattresses. Find out how much you should pay for the mattress of your choice. Only a good research can help you prepare for your final purchase.
3. Compare
How do you shop? Do you go to a store and get the first item you see? In shopping for a mattress, always compare different options. Don't pick out one product, see if it matches your needs, and then buy it. For all you know, another mattress out there meets your needs, provides additional features, and offers a better price.
Different Factors to Consider
Now, in your research and comparison, which factors should you pay the most attention to?
1. The size of the mattress
The first thing to consider is the size of the mattress. This should be the first factor that narrows down your many options. Here are the available mattress sizes.
· California King 72x84 inches
· King 76x80 inches
· Queen 60x80 inches
· Full 54x75 inches
· Twin 39x75
· Extra long twin 39x80
2. Spring or foam?
Next, decide whether you prefer a mattress that uses coil springs as the core or foam as the core.
3. Memory foam or latex foam?
If you decide to go for a foam mattress, you need to further choose between memory foam and latex foam.
4. Soft or firm?
Different innerspring, memory foam, and latex foam mattresses also provide different softness and firmness levels. For example, one model of a memory foam mattress will appear in around three different versions: soft, firm, medium firm. This way, you can get that model with all its features but with the firmness level you prefer.

How to Choose the Best Cot & Cotbed Mattress For Your Baby
The mattress you choose for your new baby is an important decision and with so many options on the market this guide will give you the information you need to make correct choice for your baby.
The main choices are Foam, Fibre, Spring and Pocket Sprung. These range in price with Foam being the cheapest option ranging up to Pocket Sprung as the luxury choice. There are also some alternative options available including Bamboo core with its anti bacterial qualities and a new design from Pur Flow which consist of a liner stretched over a frame. A very different concept which is aimed at children with allergies.
Foam
Foam mattresses are made from a high density foam and most can be cut to any size you require. There are varying degrees of ventilation from the head section which aids the circulation of air around baby's head and also allows for drainage of any liquids or fluids, particularly where newborn babies are concerned. To a mattress which is ventilated entirely from top to bottom, which allows circulation of air all over whatever the position of the baby is laid in the cot. With the "supervent" style mattresses there is usually a non toxic pvc sleeve which is adjustable anywhere over the mattress pad.
Fibre
This mattress is filled with the natural fibres from the coconut which are bound together with natural latex and then layered between foam. This offers comfort and resilience. This style of mattress offers excellent air flow and is of course environmentally friendly. However we have noticed a move away from this type of mattress for children with allergies or asthma symptoms.
Spring
The spring mattress is rather like your own sprung mattress and is made from coil springs which provide posture, support and durability which in tern is sandwiched between two layers of foam. The mattress is also fully breathable.
Pocket Sprung
This mattress is the ultimate in comfort and support made with a network of independent pocketed springs provides excellent support, helps prevent indentations and increases comfort as each spring responds individually to your child's sleeping position.
PurFlo Mattresses
The PurFlo mattress is available in two sizes to fit the most common cots or cotbeds. The PurFlo Mattress has a SleepSurface that allows free circulation of air around your child, and enables you to banish house Dust Mites and their excreta, which generate allergens linked to asthma, eczema and related diseases.
The SleepSurface is easily removed for washing at 60°C to eliminate allergens, bacteria and fungi. Conversely, traditional mattresses suffer, for example, from accumulations of allergens in their covers - which may be washable - and in their cores - from which they cannot be removed.
The PurFlo Mattress is safe for babies in the first few weeks after birth, when it is particularly important to ensure that they do not get too cold by virtue of its breathable surface, the mattress reduces the risk of overheating in older babies because it has lower thermal insulation than ordinary mattresses overheating, particularly when a baby has an acute infection, can be very dangerous the mattress prevents the pooling of exhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) and makes it less likely that this will be re-inhaled. There is evidence that in some circumstances rebreathing can be fatal to a baby.
All of these benefits make the PurFlo Mattress the most advanced defence against identified risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and the best method to avoid allergens linked with Asthma, Eczema and related diseases.
These are just some of the options available and I hope that the information makes your decision a little easier. I would always recommend visiting your local independent nursery specialist who will be able to advice you on the best options.
